Sony MDR-Z7M2, MDR-Z1R info, wiring, Replacement & Custom Cables

TL;DR Any of our cables from this product collection (HC-9-TRCs) are fully compatible with Sony's MDR-Z7M2, Z1R etc. series of headphones!

Sony's MDR-Z1R (as well as the MDR-Z7M2) is a dual entry headphone, taking a 3.5mm TRS connector in each earcup. The connectors feature a "collared" sheathing that screws into place once connected for added strain relief / security between the cable and headphone connection.

WIRING / PINOUT

The 3.5mm connectors going to each ear cup are standard 3.5mm TRS types, however, Sony uses a less common pinout in the space, making it a little more difficult to find / build a proper replacement cable for these headphones. See the diagram below:

BALANCED?

Sony's dual entry headphones are wired internally such that they are balanced capable, so there is no issue using these headphones with balanced outputs, provided you have the correct cable / connectors to do so!

What cables should I get?

As far as our products at Hart Audio go, you can use any of our "HC-9-TRC" cable models with these headphones. Just choose the appropriate interconnects or terminations for the source / output connections you'll be plugging into.
